Am I the only Red Sox fan…

…not overly impressed with this sell-out record that will be broken on Monday at Fenway?

Given how many of those tickets that count toward all those sold out games are purchased by scalpers and “brokers”, and given how many seats go unused every game (at least every game that I’ve been at) and how many tickets scalpers at Fenway seem to be left with on any given weekday…well, I’m not all that impressed.

Yeah, in theory it’s cool…but its a bit of a false record in my mind.  I’m all for extolling the virtues of Red Sox fans when it’s appropriate…but I’m not convinced that’s the case this time.

These are the things I think about when the game in front of me is, as I wrote, a huge bag of suck.

I think it’s a heck of an achievement; I’m just not sure it’s one that makes me feel I have to BE THERE for the record-breaking day.

The scalper issue is irrelevant to me; I think the tickets that don’t get used (not the same as seats that don’t get sat in) are minimal in the overall numbers. There’s no doubt in my mind that if folks hadn’t bought them to resell they’d have been sold to real fans and the sellouts would still be intact.

Cyn, the Indians who hold the record did all sorts of things to keep the record which were less than honorable. Since scalping has come into the picture I’m not sure any team or attendance record is really what it seems.

I still wish for the “old” days when I could actually get a ticket by walking up to the park or buying them without having to enter a lottery. I must be very old.

I don’t mean to say it’s dishonest…but it’s just not something, to me, that’s totally legitimate if I go to games when I see seats that aren’t occupied. To me, sold out means the bodies are in the seats. Nitpicking, I know…

Except that I think with the expansion of the park (the first and third base decks, Yawkey, the folks who have figured out how to sneak into the pavilions), there are a lot of places to go if you don’t feel like sitting in your seats. Heck, if I were any taller even those loge box seats in the left field corner would kill me!

I don’t understand getting tix and then hanging somewhere else at the park, but then, I don’t understand making 5+ trips to the beer line, either…

I was just having THIS discussion with someone last night. I will never understand paying for a seat you really don’t use.

I hadn’t considered those empty seats were owned by folks wandering around the park either looking for a better seat or waiting in a beer line. :/

I can’t believe the rain. My parents are out in this because they had to go to a wedding and just called me to tell me how shitty the driving conditions are.

Yay…that instills all kinds of good feelings…

Ack. Well, I’m sure it could be a lot worse; the wind has picked up a little but it doesn’t seem to be much of a factor.

You also have season ticket holders who have bought the seats but may not use them every night. Still counts towards a sell out just like the scalper tickets. The money went into the Red Sox coffers when the ticket was sold and they sold enough for each game to be considered a sold out game.
I would rather have seen Wake get a win for his 500th game than extend the sold out streak. Oh well.
