Mmmmmike Lowell

Ian Browne is reporting that the  Boston Herald is reporting that the Red Sox extended Mark Teixeira an 8-year offer.

That sound you hear is the collective scream of the Mike Lowell Estrogen Brigade…and my dad.  My dad has a huge man-crush on Mike Lowell.  (My mother is a member of the brigade and I don’t know what the hell she’ll do when Lowell is no longer a Red Sox player.  Let’s not mess up Christmas, okay Theo?)

But before folks get their undies in a bunch (whether excited about the prospect of Teixeira on the Sox or upset at the prospect of losing Mike Lowell because Teixeira is on the Sox), let’s see where the Herald got their information from:

Er.  Um.  There doesn’t seem to be any indication of where Michael Silverman got his information.  Not even a “sources who prefer to remain anonymous” line.  Not any mention of “sources” at all.

Just this:

.

The Sox have made an offer, the biggest and longest yet for this current ownership group. The offer is believed to be for at least eight years, with ownership and baseball operations cognizant that Teixeira, 29, represents the safest bet they can make for at least this year and next to shore up the heart of an aging lineup.

So it’s done. We’re writing about it like the offer has been made and been made PUBLIC that the offer is out there.  If so, why is the Herald being credited as the source for this story?

We all know that the Sox are interested in Teixeira and we all know that they will, at some point, be making an offer.  But here I go nitpicking again.  How can Silverman get away with writing the above without crediting any source – and expect people to just believe him?  And why would MLB.com pick up the story and run with it?

How do you get SO specific as to say “The Sox have made an offer, the biggest and longest yet for this current ownership group.” and then not tell people where this information came from?

This whole thing just makes me tired.  Let’s talk about something else.  Like how I’m going to have  nightmares about Daisuke Matsuzaka messing up his pitching arm in the WBC.

Weeee.  There’s something to look forward to.

I’m in the Lowell brigade, too!
I know Teixeira is a great pick up but I hate the thought of Lowell leaving the Sox.
Could they pay him to sit in the dugout and have the camera pan over there once or twice an inning?

Enough about Teixeira. No, No, No (besides I can’t even pronounce his name.
Lowell could sit in my den and watch the games with the family.
I don’t need to be worrying about this a week before Christmas! Cut it out Cyn!

I think Dan Patrick started this “leak” yesterday a.m., but even still – you know how it is in journalism — they never have to reveal their source. Truthfully, the quieter the Sox are – the more credibility it lends to the rumors. This is the standard MO with the Sox for these kinds of things. If it was entirely erroneous, it may be contradicted. Such as them speaking out to clarify offers haven’t been put on the table for certain players. That ain’t happenin’ here….

Plus there’s the fact that the Angels are thinking of picking up Lowell should Texeria go to the Sox; it was in the LA Times as such – but again, nothing is gospel right?

I don’t love the idea of DiceK pitching in this; but at the same time, he probably could use some practice on throwing first strikes. LOL. I’m not a huge fan of his…. way too frustrating of a pitching style for me.

The presumption here is that were the Sox to land Teixeira, Lowell would be the guy to go. Youkilis would then move to third, and Teixeira would be the team 1B…

Why people aren’t considering it might be Youkilis as the guy on a bus headed out of town is not out of the realm of possibility…

Look to your minor league players in development and their projected progression to the bigs. There might be some answers to all of this, a few years down the line.

Some conjecture Lowell might not bring much in trade, especially considering his age, coming off season ending injury, and his overall cost. But let’s throw another idea into the mix, as off the wall as it sounds… there is always the bench, although I doubt that kind of crazy move…

And lastly, there is no doubt Teixeira brings solid defense and a serious bat to whatever club he’ll play for. He’s the owner of 2 GG, and is a 30/100+ player. His principal position has been 1B and DH… DH… DH… DH….

Flexibility, daring and creative thinking is what earned us a couple of WS titles…

Youkilis’ flexibility and Lowell’s health issues are the two reasons I don’t see the Sox booting Youkilis over Lowell.

That and throwing buckets of cash at the likes of Schilling, Foulke and Drew. ;)

  • Rebecca says:

That and the fact that the Sox have publicly advertised they’re in the midst of negotiating Youk’s contract for the long term.

  • Tru says:

Cyn, while that is a valid point, of the two (Lowell or Youk), which in your estimation would return the most value in trade?

Rebecca, negotiating a long term contract is not a guarantee of not being traded.

  • Cyn says:

Youk would definitely get a better return, but unless they plan on trading for a catcher, I don’t see where they need to get something fabulous back if they’re signing Teixeira.

  • Tru says:

Catcher… well, there ya go! I’m not being funny, or trying to be, but yeah, I’m of the opinion there’s a fall back plan if Tek doesn’t kick Boras into a reasonable place. It may mean some weird wheeling and dealing for a front line catcher, which means one avenue is via trade… I’m hoping, though, Tek comes to terms.

This is entirely off subject but…

I saw the rebroadcast of the Mother’s Day Miracle on NESN the other night. My eyes were glued to the screen. I really, really miss baseball. I miss the players, the green of the field, the sound of a ball plunking off the monster, the sound of the crowd and the chance to jump up and down when something cool happens.

With an inch or two of snow in Portland this morning, my longing only grows.

Just had to get that off my chest. I know others here may feel the same…

    (sigh.)

I don’t want to lose Lowell either, but…Mark Teixeira backing up Papi sure would be SWEET.

  • NOW people are mad at Dibble

I get that the Strasburg stuff is a big deal but had enough people been outraged about the women cracks, maybe Dibble would have thought twice before shooting his mouth off about Strasburg.
