Sam Fuld wrote a first-person account for Grantland about how wonderful it was to beat the Yankees in that last game of the regular season. Whatever. Good for him. (Bitter? Me? NO!) Here’s what he says happened when the game was over:
Someone asked Johnny Damon if this was as good as winning a World Series with Boston and New York. As he smoked a cigar, he simply said, shaking his head, “Better.” Maybe we were all caught up in the moment, but I think every one of us nodded and wholeheartedly believed him.
I won’t speak to Fuld and his teammates believing that winning a game against the Yankees (after being down 7-0) on the last day of the season to get into the playoffs (which, admittedly, is pretty damn cool) is better than winning two World Series championships. I’ll just say this:
If Johnny Damon went to the bathroom and there was a reporter there to ask him if the dump he just took was as good as winning the World Series with the Red Sox or the Yankees, it wouldn’t surprise me if he responded “Better”.
