"You don’t save a pitcher for tomorrow. Tomorrow it may rain." – Leo Durocher

Up is down

So I’m looking at the American League East standings this morning and I see the Orioles are just one game behind the Yankees and each team has five games left to play.  This has the promise of a very exciting next five days.

It also means that in spite of my allegiances (although actually because of them as well), I’ve been rooting for the Red Sox to lose this weekend.  ”Rooting” might be the wrong word. But I’m definitely hoping for the Orioles to overtake the Yankees in the division and if the pathway to knocking the Yankees off the top means the Red Sox have to lose to the Orioles…I’m okay with that.

The Red Sox are playing to end the season.  That’s it. Sad but true. Nothing I do will change how this season is going to end for the team. But I can still get some enjoyment from Major League Baseball and watching the Yankees lose the division would bring me great joy.  The Blue Jays just did their part and beat the Yankees, now the Red Sox have to help the cause tonight and the Orioles will once again be tied for first place.

At some point the baseball gods have to throw us a bone, right?

I think of the Orioles as “friendly rivals” and never really hate it when they win one although, if it were us and them in September, it would be all rivalry, no doubt. I don’t actually get riled up about any team except you know who.
